Teaching Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in South African High Schools in the Frances Baard District

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is an exciting development in Geography education locally and internationally. GIS has been part of the senior high school curriculum for over a decade South Africa. However, matric pass rates section Geography, which examined paper 2 national examinations, are low. This research was conducted to investigate teaching methods used by teachers teach schools Frances Baard district, Northern Cape Province. The mixed method approach multiple-case study design were study. Data from gathered using questionnaire, interviews, lesson observations. questionnaire completed 50 teachers, 10 interviewed observed while topics. Results showed that most multiple approaches, mainly teacher-centred. These included lecturing, explanation, questioning at expense learner-centred approaches fundamental instruction. due challenges faced including lack physical resources GIS, large classes, proper training, time constraints. question how should be taught source consternation among geography educators, more especially developing countries such as Africa, where some computers, software, internet connectivity, electricity connection. utility value having curriculum, promoting e-education generally, cannot achieved if there no systemic initiative create appropriate environments skills entrusted with GIS. current fail propel better learning understanding learners. reflected ongoing low rate nationally. proposes paradigm shift way being schools.
